What Are The 30 Free Childcare Hours?

Free Childcare for Working Parents is an England-only scheme that can provide eligible families with up to 30 hours of approved childcare per week for children aged from nine months to four years old.

The standard offer covers 38 weeks of the year, creating a maximum annual entitlement of 1,140 hours. A provider may allow families to use fewer hours each week over more weeks.

  • It is funded childcare rather than money paid to the parent.
  • The child must use registered or approved childcare.
  • Work, income and residency conditions apply.
  • Funded places remain subject to provider availability.
  • Families may still pay for extra hours and optional services.
  • Eligibility normally needs to be reconfirmed every three months.

How Do 30 Free Childcare Hours Work In England?

Eligible parents apply through a government childcare account. If the application is approved, the parent receives an 11-digit eligibility code and gives it to a participating childcare provider.

The provider validates the code and uses government funding to deliver the agreed funded sessions. Parents do not normally receive the funding directly into their bank account.

Check That Your Child Is The Relevant Age

The working-parent entitlement can apply from the term after the child reaches nine months old and continues until school age, subject to the current scheme rules.

Check The Work And Income Conditions

Each eligible parent normally needs to be working or starting work and expect to meet the applicable minimum earnings test. An adjusted net income ceiling also applies to each parent.

Apply Through A Childcare Account

Parents apply online and provide details such as National Insurance numbers, employment information and the child’s details.

Receive And Share The Eligibility Code

Approved applicants receive an 11-digit code. The code, parent’s National Insurance number and child’s date of birth are provided to the childcare setting.

Agree A Funded Attendance Pattern

The family and provider agree which sessions will use funded hours and which additional hours or services will be privately charged.

Reconfirm Eligibility Regularly

Parents normally sign into the childcare account every three months to confirm that their details remain current.

An eligibility code does not automatically reserve a childcare place. Families should contact providers early to confirm funded availability on the days and sessions they need.

Is It Really 30 Hours Every Week?

The headline entitlement is 30 hours per week for 38 weeks, not necessarily 30 hours in every week of the calendar year. The maximum standard annual total is 1,140 hours.

A family using childcare for 48 or 51 weeks may be able to stretch the entitlement. For example, 1,140 annual hours divided across 48 weeks equals approximately 23.75 funded hours per week.

Whether stretched funding is available depends on the provider. The provider may also use fixed session patterns rather than allowing parents to divide hours in any way they choose.

Is The Scheme Available Across The UK?

This particular working-parent scheme applies in England. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland operate different childcare funding systems. Families outside England should check the childcare support available through their national government or local authority.

Official information: Check the current GOV.UK Free Childcare for Working Parents guidance before applying or making a financial commitment.

Who Is Eligible For 30 Free Childcare Hours?

Eligibility is based on the child’s age and circumstances, each parent’s work and expected income, residency conditions and use of approved childcare.

Child-Age Requirement

The child normally needs to be aged from nine months to four years old. Funded hours usually begin from the next relevant term date after the child reaches the qualifying age.

Work Requirement

A parent and their partner, when applicable, normally need to be in work or about to start a job. Employment, self-employment and work as a company director may count.

Parents on certain forms of paid or statutory leave may continue to qualify. Some households may also qualify where one parent works and the other receives a qualifying disability or caring benefit.

Minimum Earnings Requirement

Each parent normally needs to expect earnings equivalent to at least 16 hours per week at the National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage applicable to their age.

Because statutory wage rates can change, families should use the current figures shown on GOV.UK rather than relying on an older article or saved calculation.

Maximum Income Rule

A parent will not normally qualify if their expected adjusted net income exceeds £100,000 for the current tax year. In a couple, the limit applies separately to each partner rather than to combined household income.

Approved Childcare Requirement

The hours must be used with a registered or approved childcare provider that participates in the relevant funded-childcare arrangement.

This could include a participating nursery, preschool, registered childminder, school-based setting or another approved provider.

Residency And Immigration Conditions

The applicant and their partner normally need National Insurance numbers. The person applying must also meet the relevant citizenship, immigration or public-funds access conditions.

Employed Parents

Earnings from one or more jobs may count towards the minimum earnings requirement.

Self-Employed Parents

Self-employment can qualify, with special treatment potentially applying during a recent business start-up period.

Parents On Leave

Some maternity, paternity, adoption, shared parental, sick and annual leave situations can count.

Starting A New Job

A parent may be able to apply before starting work, subject to the scheme’s timing rules.

Eligibility can be affected by details not covered in a general guide. Use the official application service for a decision rather than assuming that meeting one or two conditions is enough.

When Do The 30 Free Childcare Hours Start?

A child does not normally begin using the entitlement on the exact day they turn nine months old. Start dates are organised around three main childcare periods during the year.

Child Reaches 9 Months Funded Hours Can Usually Start Application Deadline
1 September To 31 December 1 January Apply By 31 December
1 January To 31 March 1 April Apply By 31 March
1 April To 31 August 1 September Apply By 31 August

Parents can generally apply from when their child is 23 weeks old. It is sensible to apply before the deadline and avoid leaving the application until the final day.

Why Do Start Dates Follow Terms?

Term-based start dates give local authorities and providers time to validate codes, organise funding and plan staffing and childcare places.

What If The Deadline Is Missed?

A late application can mean waiting until the following funded period. Even where the parent appears eligible, a provider may be unable to claim funding retrospectively for childcare already used.

What If A Parent Is Returning To Work?

Separate application windows can apply when a parent is returning from maternity, paternity, adoption or shared parental leave. Starting a new job can also affect when an application can be made.

Apply early and ask the provider when the funded place will begin. Application approval, code validation and an available provider place are all needed before the arrangement is secure.

When Should A Provider Receive The Code?

Give the eligibility code to the provider as soon as it is issued. The provider may also request the parent’s National Insurance number and the child’s date of birth to validate the code.

Why Must Eligibility Be Reconfirmed?

Employment, income and family circumstances can change. Parents normally sign into the childcare account every three months and confirm that their details remain correct.

Applying a long time before the funded start date may mean that the code needs to be reconfirmed before the child begins using the hours.

What Do The 30 Free Childcare Hours Cover?

Government funding is intended to cover eligible childcare hours delivered through an approved provider. It does not automatically cover every item or service included in a provider’s private childcare package.

Core Funded Childcare

The provider should make the funded hours available without requiring the parent to buy additional hours or extras as a condition of receiving the funded place.

Additional Childcare Hours

If a family books more hours than the funded weekly allocation, those additional hours will usually be charged at the provider’s private rate or session price.

Meals And Snacks

A provider may ask families to pay for meals or snacks. Where a parent does not want to pay, the provider should discuss a reasonable alternative, such as allowing suitable food to be supplied from home.

Nappies And Consumables

Nappies, wipes, creams and other consumables may be charged separately. Parents should ask whether they can supply their own items instead.

Trips And Additional Activities

Optional activities, classes and trips may create additional charges. The provider should explain whether participation is optional and what alternative care will be provided.

Childcare Cost Usually Covered By Funded Hours? What Parents Should Check
Core Approved Childcare Hours Yes, within the available entitlement Which days and sessions are funded
Hours Above The Entitlement No The provider’s private hourly or session rate
Meals And Snacks Not necessarily Whether a no-cost alternative is available
Nappies And Consumables Not necessarily Whether parents can provide their own items
Trips And Extra Activities Not necessarily Whether the activity is optional
Registration Or Deposit Provider-specific Whether the charge applies to a funded place
A provider should not make payment for optional extras a condition of accessing funded childcare. Raise unresolved concerns with the local council’s early-years or Family Information Service team.

Does 30 Hours Mean 30 Completely Free Clock Hours?

The funded place should be available without a mandatory charge for the core entitlement. However, an invoice may still include additional booked hours or separately agreed services.

Can Tax-Free Childcare Be Used For The Remaining Bill?

Eligible families may be able to use Tax-Free Childcare for approved costs outside the funded hours. Families may also qualify for Universal Credit childcare support, but Tax-Free Childcare and Universal Credit childcare support cannot normally be received at the same time.

Examples Of How 30 Free Childcare Hours Can Be Used

Providers can offer different attendance patterns. The following examples illustrate possible arrangements rather than guaranteed provider schedules.

Example 1: Standard Term-Time Pattern

A child attends six hours per day, Monday to Friday, for 38 weeks. This uses 30 funded hours each week and the full 1,140-hour annual entitlement.

Example 2: Three Longer Days

A provider may agree to apply ten funded hours on each of three days during funded weeks. Any childcare outside those sessions may be charged separately.

Example 3: Stretched Across 48 Weeks

Dividing 1,140 hours by 48 weeks provides approximately 23.75 funded hours per week. A child attending 40 hours could therefore have roughly 16.25 privately paid hours each week, before extras.

Example 4: Stretched Across 51 Weeks

Dividing 1,140 hours by 51 weeks provides approximately 22.35 funded hours per week. The provider must offer this arrangement before a family can use it.

Example 5: Using Fewer Than 30 Hours

Families do not have to use the full entitlement. A parent needing 18 hours of childcare may use only those 18 hours if the provider can offer the required sessions.

Unused funded hours are not normally paid to the parent and cannot necessarily be saved indefinitely or transferred to a later year.

Can Hours Be Split Between Providers?

It may be possible to divide funded hours between more than one participating provider, subject to local rules, provider policies and the maximum hours that can be claimed.

Families should tell each provider about the shared arrangement so the total claim does not exceed the available entitlement.

Can A Provider Restrict The Days Offered?

Providers can design the funded sessions they are able to offer. A nursery may limit funded-only places to particular days or sessions because of staffing, demand and capacity.

Parents can ask another approved provider if the available pattern does not match their needs, but an eligibility code does not compel every provider to offer any requested schedule.
