See Beyond The Advertised Childcare Fee

A nursery or childminder may publish a daily, sessional or hourly price, but that figure does not always show the amount your household will eventually pay. Your final cost can depend on funded hours, attendance weeks, additional services and the way your provider applies childcare funding.

The Childcare Savings Calculator creates a side-by-side comparison between your estimated gross bill and the amount left after the support figures you enter. This can help when comparing providers, reviewing working hours or planning a return to employment.

  • Compare annual, monthly and weekly childcare costs.
  • Estimate the financial value of usable funded hours.
  • Include optional provider extras in your family budget.
  • Model Tax-Free Childcare without counting support twice.
  • Test different providers, hours and attendance patterns.

How The Childcare Savings Calculator Works

The calculator begins with your estimated childcare hours, hourly rate, number of children and annual attendance weeks. These figures are used to create an approximate gross childcare bill before any support is deducted.

It then estimates the value of funded hours using the hourly fee you entered. The calculation cannot reproduce every provider’s funding policy, so you should enter only the funded hours and weeks that your nursery, preschool or childminder has agreed can be applied to your booking.

Gross Childcare Cost

Your gross fee is calculated by multiplying the number of children, weekly booked hours, annual attendance weeks and hourly rate. Weekly additional charges are then added. This provides a broad estimate of what the childcare arrangement could cost without support.

Calculator formula: number of children × weekly childcare hours × childcare weeks × hourly rate, plus weekly extras. Funded-hours value and other selected support are then deducted, subject to the available childcare cost.

Funded Childcare Value

Funded hours are converted into an estimated monetary value using the provider rate entered in the form. In practice, government funding is paid to the provider under local arrangements, and a funded hour is not necessarily a cash payment made directly to the parent.

Providers may also structure sessions, consumables and optional services differently. Ask for a written illustration showing how funded hours appear on your invoice before relying on a savings estimate.

Tax-Free Childcare Estimate

When Tax-Free Childcare is selected, the calculator estimates the government top-up required to help meet eligible costs remaining after funded-hours value and other support. It applies the annual limit selected in the form.

Tax-Free Childcare generally works through an online childcare account. Families pay money into the account and the government adds a top-up, which can then be used to pay a registered provider. Eligibility rules and interactions with other benefits must be checked separately.

For an official personalised check, use the GOV.UK childcare support calculator. You can also review current childcare schemes through Childcare Choices.

Childcare Support That Could Reduce Your Costs

Childcare support is not a single universal discount. The options available can depend on where you live, your child’s age, household circumstances, employment, income, benefit position and the type of childcare provider you use.

The calculator allows you to model common forms of support, but it does not decide whether your family qualifies. Always check the latest official conditions before applying or making a financial commitment.

Funded Childcare Hours

Eligible families in England may be able to access funded hours with an approved provider. The age, work and application rules depend on the specific entitlement.

Tax-Free Childcare

Eligible working families can use an online account through which the government adds money toward approved childcare costs, subject to scheme limits.

Universal Credit Childcare

Some working Universal Credit claimants may receive support with eligible childcare costs. This support cannot normally be used alongside Tax-Free Childcare.

Employer And Local Support

Employers, colleges, universities, councils or charities may provide additional childcare help, grants, workplace nurseries or family-support programmes.

Free Childcare For Working Parents

In England, eligible working parents may be able to access funded childcare for a child from the relevant age until school age. The hours are normally expressed as a weekly amount over a set number of weeks, although some providers may offer a stretched pattern over more weeks.

Funded childcare is intended to cover the childcare place rather than every possible provider charge. Meals, nappies, additional hours, trips and optional activities may be charged separately. These extras are why the calculator includes a dedicated weekly charges field.

Tax-Free Childcare

Tax-Free Childcare can be used with approved childcare such as registered nurseries, childminders and some before-school, after-school and holiday clubs. The scheme may be used alongside funded hours, but not alongside certain other childcare support.

Do not enter a full childcare-account payment as a saving. The money you deposit remains your contribution. Only the government top-up reduces the amount you personally need to provide.

Universal Credit Childcare Costs

Universal Credit childcare support follows different rules from Tax-Free Childcare. Families should compare the potential value of each route before switching because the most suitable option depends on earnings, childcare costs and wider benefit entitlement.

Avoid double counting: do not include Tax-Free Childcare in the calculator when your estimated “other monthly support” already contains a childcare top-up or reimbursement for the same cost.
Read current official information about Free Childcare for Working Parents, Tax-Free Childcare and Universal Credit childcare costs before deciding which support to include.

How To Compare Childcare Costs Accurately

The cheapest advertised hourly rate is not always the least expensive arrangement. One provider may include meals and consumables, while another may add them separately. Session lengths, holiday charges, deposits, notice periods and minimum attendance rules can also change the annual cost.

Convert Every Quote Into The Same Time Period

Compare providers using the same unit. An annual comparison is often the clearest because it captures holidays, funded weeks and charges that do not appear in a typical week.

Cost Element What To Ask The Provider Why It Matters
Core Fee Is the price hourly, sessional, daily or monthly? Different billing units can make quotes difficult to compare.
Funded Hours How are funded hours allocated across sessions? Your usable saving may differ from a simple hourly calculation.
Meals And Consumables Which extras are optional and what alternatives are offered? Regular extras can materially increase the annual bill.
Closures And Holidays Are you charged during holidays or provider closures? The number of payable weeks affects your true annual cost.
Deposits And Registration Are fees refundable, credited or non-refundable? Upfront charges affect the cost of starting childcare.
Notice Period How much notice is required to reduce or end sessions? A long notice period can create costs when circumstances change.

Use The Calculator For Several Scenarios

Run one calculation for each provider rather than averaging their rates together. You can also test shorter working days, fewer childcare weeks, a stretched funding pattern or a different mix of nursery and family care.

  1. Calculate your current arrangement as a baseline.
  2. Enter the full fee and extras for the alternative provider.
  3. Use only the funded hours that each provider confirms.
  4. Keep other support consistent across both calculations.
  5. Compare annual remaining costs rather than only weekly fees.

Consider The Value Of Convenience

Cost is important, but a slightly more expensive provider may still work better if it reduces commuting, offers reliable holiday care, provides suitable opening hours or prevents you from losing working time. A financial comparison should sit alongside quality, availability and the needs of your child.

Common Childcare Savings Calculation Mistakes

A childcare budget can look more affordable than it really is when support is entered incorrectly or recurring provider charges are missed. Check the assumptions behind the result before using it to change your working pattern or sign a childcare contract.

Assuming Every Funded Hour Replaces A Paid Hour

Providers may apply funded hours within defined sessions or across a particular number of weeks. If your booking does not align with that structure, the reduction shown on the invoice may differ from a simple hourly calculation.

Leaving Out Additional Charges

Meals, snacks, nappies, trips, consumables and optional activities can form a noticeable part of the annual childcare budget. Add all regular weekly charges and keep one-off costs in a separate family budget.

Using 52 Weeks Automatically

Some providers charge throughout the year, while others close for holidays or offer term-time-only places. Use the number of weeks you are actually expected to pay.

Counting The Same Support Twice

Do not place a Tax-Free Childcare top-up in the monthly support box and also select the Tax-Free Childcare calculation. Similarly, do not treat funded hours as cash support if they have already been deducted from your provider’s quoted fee.

Ignoring Scheme Compatibility

Some forms of childcare help cannot be claimed at the same time. Check how a change could affect your wider benefit position before cancelling an existing scheme or moving money between childcare accounts.

Treating The Result As Guaranteed

The calculator is a budgeting tool. It does not verify your income, employment, immigration status, child’s age, disability status, provider approval or application deadlines. Official services and your childcare provider remain the appropriate sources for a final decision.

Save a copy of each provider’s fee schedule, funding policy and written quote. Recalculate whenever your child’s hours, provider rate, funded entitlement or family support changes.

Childcare Savings Calculator FAQs

Answers to common questions about calculating childcare fees, funded hours and estimated family savings.

It estimates your original childcare bill, the approximate value of funded hours, optional Tax-Free Childcare support, other entered contributions, total savings and the remaining amount your family may need to pay.
No. It is an independent budgeting tool. Use the official GOV.UK childcare calculator and the relevant application service to check eligibility.
The tool multiplies your entered funded hours by the number of funded weeks, number of children and provider hourly rate. It limits the reduction so it cannot exceed the estimated core childcare fee. Your provider’s actual invoice may use a different structure.
Funded childcare does not necessarily cover meals, nappies, consumables, trips, additional hours or optional activities. Ask your provider for a written explanation of all charges and available alternatives.
Eligible families may generally use Tax-Free Childcare for approved childcare costs that remain alongside funded childcare hours. Scheme eligibility, provider approval and permitted costs must still be checked.
Tax-Free Childcare and Universal Credit childcare support cannot normally be claimed at the same time. Compare the wider effect on your household finances and obtain official guidance before switching.
You can enter a regular employer payment, grant, maintenance contribution or another amount that directly reduces childcare costs. Do not include support already represented elsewhere in the calculator.
Enter an average hourly cost and average weekly pattern per child, then select the number of children. For children with very different rates or schedules, run a separate calculation for each child and combine the results.
Providers may charge by session, restrict how funded hours are used, spread invoices across the year or add separate charges. The calculator uses the information you enter and cannot reproduce every provider’s contract or local funding arrangement.
Recalculate when provider fees, childcare hours, funded entitlement, attendance weeks, employment, income or benefit circumstances change. It is also useful to review the calculation before each new childcare term.
