How To Claim Back Childcare Costs On Universal Credit

Universal Credit can help working families pay for registered childcare. The childcare-cost element operates mainly as a reimbursement: you pay the childcare provider, report the payment and may receive part of the eligible amount through Universal Credit.

Eligible claimants can currently receive up to 85% of qualifying childcare costs. From 6 April 2026, the maximum for each assessment period is £1,071.09 for one child and £1,836.16 for two or more children.

These are maximum childcare amounts rather than guaranteed additions to every award. The final Universal Credit payment depends on the household’s complete calculation, including earnings and deductions.

Main rule: Report childcare costs as soon as you pay them. The normal deadline is the assessment period in which the payment was made or the following assessment period.

    How The 85% Reimbursement Works

Universal Credit first considers the childcare costs accepted as eligible. It can then include up to 85% of those costs, subject to the relevant maximum.

Eligible Childcare Cost 85% Calculation Possible Amount Before Other UC Calculations
    £400 £400 × 85% £340
    £800 £800 × 85% £680
    £1,200 For One Child £1,200 × 85% = £1,020 £1,020, below the one-child maximum
    £1,500 For One Child £1,500 × 85% = £1,275 Capped at £1,071.09
    £2,000 For Two Children £2,000 × 85% = £1,700 £1,700, below the two-or-more maximum

Do You Have To Pay The Childcare First?

You normally pay the childcare provider first and then report the payment through Universal Credit. An unpaid invoice alone will not usually show that the childcare cost has actually been paid.

You should keep evidence showing the amount, the date of payment and the childcare dates covered.

What Happens If You Pay Childcare Upfront?

GOV.UK guidance says you can report up to three assessment periods of future childcare costs at a time when those costs have already been paid upfront and you have proof.

The eligible amount is normally allocated across the assessment periods to which the childcare applies rather than paid back as one immediate lump sum.

Can Universal Credit Pay Before The Childcare Happens?

The ordinary childcare-cost reimbursement is linked to childcare that has taken place, although prepaid future costs can be reported and allocated to the periods they cover.

Separate upfront help may be available where you are starting work or increasing your working hours and cannot afford the initial childcare payment.

Check the official Universal Credit childcare costs guidance before reporting a large advance payment.

Who Can Claim Universal Credit Childcare Costs?

You generally need to be receiving Universal Credit and either be in paid work or due to start a paid job within the next month. There is no general minimum number of working hours stated in the current childcare-cost guidance.

    Single Parents

A single claimant normally needs to be working or starting work within the relevant timeframe. The childcare should enable the claimant to work, travel to work or complete an accepted work-related arrangement.

    Couples Claiming Universal Credit

Where you live with a partner, both partners normally need to be in paid work. An exception may apply when one partner cannot look after the children for a recognised reason.

When A Non-Working Partner May Be Exempt

Current GOV.UK guidance identifies situations including a partner who:

    • Has limited capability for work or limited capability for work-related activity.
    • Cares for a severely disabled person and is eligible for Carer’s Allowance.
    • Is temporarily away from home, such as being in hospital.

    Starting A New Job

You may qualify when you have a job due to begin within the next month. Contact your work coach early if you need childcare in place before the first working day.

    Statutory Leave And Sick Pay

You may remain eligible in some circumstances when receiving an accepted statutory payment, including Statutory Sick Pay or certain statutory maternity, paternity, adoption, shared parental or neonatal care payments.

    Which Children Can Be Included?

Current guidance says childcare costs can be claimed for children you are responsible for until 31 August after their 16th birthday, provided the other conditions are met.

Eligibility cannot be confirmed by this page alone. Report your circumstances accurately and use your Universal Credit journal to ask for a decision where your work or partner situation is unusual.

What Childcare Costs Can Universal Credit Cover?

Childcare normally needs to come from an appropriately registered provider and be considered reasonable for helping you work or move into work.

    Eligible Childcare Providers

Depending on the country and registration arrangements, eligible providers can include:

    • Registered day nurseries.
    • Registered childminders.
    • Registered preschools.
    • Breakfast clubs.
    • After-school clubs.
    • Holiday clubs.
    • Eligible registered nannies.

In England, registration will commonly involve Ofsted. Scotland and Wales use their relevant care inspectorates. Ask the provider for its registration number and confirm that the registration covers the childcare service being purchased.

    Childcare That Helps You Work

Eligible costs can include childcare used while working and childcare needed for travel between the childcare setting and your workplace.

    Settling-In Before Starting Work

A reasonable settling-in period before you begin work may be accepted. Keep the job start date, nursery invoice and settling schedule as evidence.

Zero-Hours Contracts And Changing Work Patterns

Childcare may still be considered reasonable where your expected working hours change or you receive fewer hours than anticipated under a variable-hours contract.

    Childcare After Losing A Job

Current guidance says reasonable childcare can include costs in the assessment period after losing work. Report the change and ask Universal Credit how it affects the relevant payment.

    Costs That May Not Qualify

    • Unregistered informal childcare.
    • Childcare not connected with work or moving into work.
    • Costs that have not actually been paid.
    • The same cost already covered by another childcare scheme.
    • Costs reported outside the normal deadline without acceptance.
    • Amounts unsupported by provider or payment evidence.

    Funded Childcare And Universal Credit

You may use funded childcare and claim Universal Credit support for additional eligible childcare costs that you personally pay. However, you cannot claim reimbursement for the funded hours themselves because you have not paid those costs.

Ask your provider to separate funded hours, private childcare, meals, consumables and other charges on the invoice.

Only enter the childcare costs you actually paid. Do not include the notional value of government-funded hours as a personal childcare payment.

How To Report Childcare Costs To Universal Credit

Childcare costs are usually reported through your online Universal Credit account. Report the payment promptly and keep all supporting documents.

    1

    Pay The Provider

Pay the childcare cost and keep a receipt, paid invoice or bank record showing the transaction.

    2

    Sign In To Universal Credit

Open your online Universal Credit account and select the option for reporting childcare costs.

    3

    Enter Payment Details

Enter the provider, child, payment amount, payment date and childcare dates accurately.

    4

    Upload Evidence

Provide the requested provider and payment evidence in a clear, readable format.

    5

    Check Your Journal

Respond quickly if Universal Credit requests clarification or additional documents.

    6

    Review Your Statement

Check whether childcare costs appear in the relevant Universal Credit statement and question any unexplained difference.

When Must Childcare Costs Be Reported?

The normal rule is to report the cost within the assessment period in which you paid it or the assessment period immediately after. If you report later, you might not receive the reimbursement.

    What Provider Evidence Is Needed?

GOV.UK says provider evidence can include a contract, invoice or letter showing:

    • The provider’s name.
    • The provider’s registration number.
    • The provider’s address and telephone number.
    • The names of the children receiving care.
    • The type of childcare supplied.

    What Payment Evidence Is Needed?

Universal Credit may ask for evidence showing:

    • The dates of childcare covered.
    • The amount paid.
    • The date the payment was made.

Evidence can include a paid invoice or a combination of bank statements, receipts and provider invoices.

What If The Invoice Covers Several Months?

Enter the information requested in your account and make it clear which childcare dates the payment covers. Up to three assessment periods of prepaid future childcare may be reported at one time, but reimbursement is normally spread across the periods to which the care relates.

Record-keeping tip: Save each invoice using the childcare month and provider name, and keep the corresponding bank payment or receipt in the same folder.

    Help With Upfront Childcare Costs

Paying childcare before receiving the Universal Credit reimbursement can create a substantial cash-flow problem. Separate support may be available when you are starting work or increasing your working hours.

    Starting A New Job

Current GOV.UK guidance says you may be able to receive help with all childcare costs for the first month when starting a new job, depending on your circumstances and approval.

    Increasing Your Working Hours

You may be able to receive help with the additional childcare costs needed for one month when increasing working hours.

    Deposits And Retainers

Help may also be available where a childcare provider requires a deposit or retainer to secure the place.

    How To Request Upfront Support

Add a message to your Universal Credit journal or speak to your work coach or a Universal Credit contact at the jobcentre. Ask before paying the provider where possible.

The dedicated upfront childcare support described in current guidance does not normally have to be repaid, although you should confirm the exact nature of any payment offered. This is different from some Universal Credit advances that may be recovered from later payments.

    Information To Prepare

    • Your job offer or evidence of increased working hours.
    • The childcare provider’s name and registration details.
    • The proposed start date.
    • The childcare days and hours required.
    • An invoice, quote or deposit request.
    • The amount you cannot afford upfront.
Contact your work coach before the childcare payment becomes due. Do not assume that an ordinary repayable Universal Credit advance is the only available option.

Review GOV.UK financial support guidance and ask specifically about help with upfront childcare costs.

Childcare Costs And Universal Credit Assessment Periods

Universal Credit is calculated using monthly assessment periods. The relationship between the payment date, childcare dates and reporting date can affect when childcare support appears.

    Paying After Childcare Has Happened

When you pay after the care has been supplied, the eligible cost is usually considered within the assessment period in which it is reported, subject to the reporting rules and verification.

    Paying Before Childcare Happens

If you pay childcare upfront, the reimbursement is normally allocated across the assessment periods covered by the childcare. It is not necessarily repaid in one lump sum immediately after the payment.

Why Monthly Provider Payments Can Help

GOV.UK suggests arranging monthly provider payments where possible and reporting each cost promptly. This can make the childcare support more consistent between Universal Credit assessment periods.

    Calendar Month Versus Assessment Period

Your Universal Credit assessment period may not begin on the first day of a calendar month. Check the exact dates shown in your online account before deciding which payment belongs to which period.

    Irregular Nursery Invoices

Some nurseries charge weekly, four-weekly, termly or annually. Keep a breakdown showing the dates covered, particularly when one payment crosses several assessment periods.

A large upfront payment may be spread across several Universal Credit assessment periods even though the full amount left your bank account at once.

Universal Credit, Tax-Free Childcare And Funded Hours

Can You Get Universal Credit And Tax-Free Childcare?

Current GOV.UK guidance says you cannot receive Tax-Free Childcare while claiming Universal Credit. Compare the likely value of each scheme before changing support.

Do not close an existing childcare account or end a Universal Credit claim solely on the basis of an online calculator. Use an independent benefits calculator or obtain specialist advice.

Universal Credit And Funded Childcare Hours

Funded childcare can be used alongside Universal Credit support for separate eligible costs. Universal Credit may help with private hours needed around funded sessions, subject to the ordinary conditions.

Avoid Claiming The Same Cost Twice

Do not report childcare that has already been fully met through funded hours or another government childcare scheme. Your invoice should distinguish the costs you actually paid.

    Meals And Consumables

Ask the provider to itemise meals, nappies, consumables and optional activities. Whether a particular item is accepted as a childcare cost may depend on its relationship to the registered childcare service and the evidence supplied.

    Funded Hours

Do not include the government-funded value as a cost you personally paid.

    Additional Hours

Private childcare needed for work may potentially be reported when all conditions are met.

Use the official government childcare calculator to compare schemes and check which support may be available.

What If Universal Credit Does Not Reimburse Your Childcare?

A delayed, reduced or refused childcare payment can result from a reporting deadline, missing evidence, provider-registration issue, duplicate cost or a change in work circumstances.

    Check The Universal Credit Statement

Review the childcare section and compare the amount with the costs you reported. Remember that the complete award can be reduced by earnings and deductions even where childcare costs are accepted.

    Check The Journal

Look for requests for evidence or clarification. Reply with the payment date, childcare dates, provider details and copies of the relevant documents.

    Check The Reporting Date

Confirm whether the cost was reported in the assessment period in which it was paid or the next assessment period.

    Check The Provider Registration

Make sure the provider was registered for the childcare supplied during the dates being claimed.

    Ask For A Written Explanation

Use your journal to ask why the cost was not accepted or why the amount differs from your calculation.

    Challenge A Decision Where Appropriate

If Universal Credit makes a formal decision you believe is wrong, check the decision notice for the review or mandatory reconsideration process and the applicable deadline.

Example journal message: I reported a childcare payment of £[amount] on [date] for childcare covering [dates]. The provider is [name and registration number]. Please explain why the childcare cost was not included and confirm whether any further evidence is required.
Keep screenshots or confirmation details showing when childcare costs and evidence were submitted through your account.

Claim Back Childcare Costs On Universal Credit FAQs

Answers to common questions about reimbursement rates, reporting deadlines, eligible providers, funded hours, evidence and upfront childcare support.

Universal Credit can reimburse up to 85% of eligible childcare costs. From 6 April 2026, the maximum is £1,071.09 per assessment period for one child and £1,836.16 for two or more children.
You normally pay the provider first and report the payment. Separate upfront help may be available if you are starting work or increasing your working hours.
Report them as soon as possible. The usual deadline is the assessment period in which you paid the cost or the following assessment period.
You can enter the information, but costs reported after the normal deadline might not be reimbursed. Explain the reason for the delay through your journal and provide evidence.
Registered nursery fees may qualify when the childcare is needed for paid work or an accepted work-related reason and all other conditions are met.
A registered childminder may qualify. Confirm registration details and keep the contract, invoices and payment records.
Registered breakfast clubs, after-school clubs and holiday clubs can potentially qualify where the childcare allows you to work.
A reasonable settling-in period before starting work can be considered eligible. Keep evidence of the job start date and the nursery’s settling schedule.
Current guidance does not set a general minimum number of working hours for the childcare-cost element. You still need to satisfy the other eligibility conditions.
Couples normally both need to be in paid work, unless the non-working partner cannot look after the children under an accepted exception.
You may qualify when starting a paid job within the next month. Contact your work coach early if childcare must begin before your first payday.
Upfront childcare help may be available for a deposit or retainer when starting work or increasing hours. Ask through your journal or contact your work coach before paying.
You may claim for separate eligible private childcare costs you personally pay around funded hours. Do not report the funded hours themselves as a paid cost.
Current government guidance says Tax-Free Childcare cannot be received while claiming Universal Credit. Compare support carefully before changing schemes.
Keep provider details, registration information, the child’s name, childcare type, childcare dates, payment date and amount paid. Evidence may include contracts, invoices, receipts and bank statements.
The cost may have reached the maximum, part may have been judged ineligible or the complete Universal Credit award may have been reduced by earnings or deductions.
Current guidance allows up to three assessment periods of prepaid future childcare costs to be reported at one time when you have already paid and can provide proof. Reimbursement is normally allocated across the periods covered.
