What Your Monthly Nursery Bill May Include
A nursery invoice may cover care, early learning activities, use of facilities and routine communication with parents. However, the items included in the headline fee vary substantially between providers.
Some nurseries include meals, snacks, nappies and local activities. Others add these separately or ask families to provide them. Request a complete written fee schedule before paying a deposit or accepting a place.
- Daily, session, weekly or fixed monthly fees
- Minimum attendance and fixed-day requirements
- Meals, nappies, consumables and activity charges
- Registration fees, deposits and notice periods
- Holiday, sickness and closure-day policies
How Much Is Nursery Cost Per Month In The UK?
There is no single nursery cost per month in the UK. The amount depends on where you live, your child’s age, the provider, the number and length of sessions, the nursery’s opening pattern and whether you can use funded childcare or another support scheme.
Parents are often shown a daily or weekly price, but household budgeting usually works better with an average monthly figure. To estimate that amount accurately, calculate the total fees charged across the year, add unavoidable extras, subtract confirmed support and divide the result by twelve.
Why Nursery Monthly Costs Differ
Regional operating costs, rent, staffing, opening hours and child-to-staff ratios all affect fees. Baby and toddler rooms can cost more than preschool rooms because younger children need closer supervision. Premium facilities, longer days, freshly prepared food, specialist activities and smaller groups can also increase the fee.
Daily Fees Versus Fixed Monthly Fees
With daily pricing, the annual cost is usually the daily fee multiplied by booked days and charged weeks. A fixed monthly fee may already be annualised and can make budgeting easier, but you should still ask what happens during bank holidays, nursery closures, family holidays and sickness.
Why Four Weeks Is Not A Full Month
There are fifty-two weeks in a typical year. Dividing that by twelve gives approximately 4.33 weeks per month. Multiplying a weekly nursery fee by four therefore understates the average monthly cost. The calculator on this page uses annual figures before dividing by twelve.
How Funded Childcare Changes Monthly Nursery Fees
Funded childcare can reduce the number of privately paid hours, but it does not always remove every charge. Providers may stretch annual funded hours over more weeks, limit the sessions in which they can be used or charge separately for meals, consumables and optional activities.
Read our free childcare funding guide and ask your provider for a written explanation of how funded hours appear on the invoice. Official information for England is available through the GOV.UK childcare eligibility service.
Tax-Free Childcare
Eligible families may use Tax-Free Childcare to receive a government top-up toward qualifying registered childcare costs. The scheme is separate from funded hours, and families should check whether they meet the current work and income rules. See our Tax-Free Childcare eligibility guide and the official GOV.UK guidance.
Universal Credit Childcare Support
Some working households receiving Universal Credit may be able to claim back a proportion of eligible childcare costs, subject to current limits, payment evidence and reporting rules. Official details are available through GOV.UK childcare cost guidance.
Example Monthly Nursery Cost Calculations
| Booking Pattern | Example Fee | Charged Weeks | Approx. Monthly Cost Before Support |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 days per week | £75 per day | 50 weeks | £625 |
| 3 days per week | £75 per day | 50 weeks | £937.50 |
| 4 days per week | £75 per day | 50 weeks | £1,250 |
| 5 days per week | £75 per day | 50 weeks | £1,562.50 |
These examples exclude funded hours, support, meals, nappies, deposits and other charges. They illustrate why annualising the fee gives a more useful monthly budget than multiplying by four.
Questions To Ask About A Nursery Monthly Invoice
- Is the fee quoted per hour, session, day, week or calendar month?
- How many weeks are charged each year?
- Are bank holidays and planned closure days charged?
- Are fees payable when the child is sick or on holiday?
- Are meals, snacks, nappies, formula and activities included?
- How are funded childcare hours allocated?
- Is there a minimum number of sessions or fixed attendance days?
- Are registration fees and deposits refundable?
- How much notice is required to change days or leave?
How To Reduce Nursery Cost Per Month
Check every childcare support scheme for which your family may qualify. Then compare different booking patterns, such as fewer longer days, term-time care or a combination of nursery and childminder care. Ask about sibling discounts, workplace partnerships and whether changing drop-off or collection times affects the session price.
Do not compare price alone. Safeguarding, staff stability, communication, travel time, opening hours and how well the nursery meets your child’s needs are equally important.
