Average Nursery Costs In 2026
The figures below illustrate how nursery costs differ by nation and funding position. England’s figures can be lower for eligible working families because expanded funded childcare reduces the privately payable portion of a place.

Why Your Nursery Cost May Differ From The UK Average
National averages are useful for initial planning, but they cannot predict an individual nursery invoice. Prices can vary significantly even between providers located only a few miles apart.
Your final cost depends on the child’s age, local wages and property expenses, booked sessions, provider opening hours, funded-childcare arrangements and any separately charged services.
- Your town, city and wider UK region
- Your child’s age and required staffing ratio
- Full-day, half-day or hourly session structure
- Number of childcare days and weeks booked
- Eligibility for funded childcare hours
- Meals, nappies, activities and other extras
- Deposits, registration fees and notice periods
What Is The Average Nursery Cost In The UK?
The average nursery cost in the UK depends heavily on where the family lives, the child’s age, the number of weekly hours and whether funded childcare is included. There is therefore no single figure that accurately represents every family.
The Coram Family and Childcare Survey 2026 reports separate figures for England, Scotland and Wales. Its data is collected through local-authority Family Information Services and is widely used to compare childcare costs and availability.
For a child under two, an unfunded part-time nursery place covering 25 hours per week averages approximately £188.75 in England, £133.08 in Scotland and £166.33 in Wales.
A full-time place covering 50 hours per week averages approximately £148.82 in England for an eligible working family paying for the remaining 20 hours, £259.10 in Scotland and £325.12 in Wales.
Average Nursery Cost Per Week
Weekly nursery fees are commonly used when comparing providers. However, some nurseries issue equal monthly invoices by annualising the cost, while others charge according to the exact number of sessions in each calendar month.
A weekly quote should therefore be checked against the provider’s annual number of chargeable weeks. Multiplying a weekly amount by 52 may overstate the cost where the nursery closes without charge, while multiplying by 48 may understate it where most closures remain chargeable.
Average Nursery Cost Per Month
A useful monthly estimate can be calculated by multiplying the weekly cost by the number of chargeable weeks and dividing the annual amount by 12. This produces an annualised monthly budget rather than the exact invoice for each calendar month.
For example, a nursery costing £200 per week across 48 chargeable weeks would cost approximately £9,600 per year, equivalent to an annualised average of £800 per month.
Average Nursery Cost Per Year
Annual costs make it easier to compare childcare with household income and government support. Remember to add deposits, registration fees, meals, consumables and holiday childcare where those amounts are not included in the normal nursery rate.
Parents returning to work should also consider commuting changes, unpaid nursery closures and the cost of backup care when a child cannot attend their usual setting.
Average Nursery Cost By UK Nation
The following 2026 benchmarks show average weekly nursery prices. England’s funded figures represent eligible working families after the applicable funded childcare has reduced the privately payable hours.
| Nursery Arrangement | England | Scotland | Wales |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under Two: 25 Hours Without Funded Hours | £188.75 Per Week | £133.08 Per Week | £166.33 Per Week |
| Under Two: 50 Hours With Applicable Funding | £148.82 Per Week For An Eligible Working Family Paying For 20 Hours | £259.10 Per Week | £325.12 Per Week |
| Two Years Old: 25 Hours With Applicable Funding | £69.94 Per Week | £133.30 Per Week | £166.01 Per Week |
| Two Years Old: 50 Hours With Applicable Funding | £140.72 Per Week For An Eligible Working Family Paying For 20 Hours | £259.68 Per Week | £329.84 Per Week |
Average Nursery Cost In England
Nursery costs in England are strongly influenced by funded childcare eligibility. Eligible working parents of children from nine months to school age can access up to 30 funded hours per week for 38 weeks of the year, subject to the current conditions.
Families not eligible for working-parent funding may pay a much higher private nursery price. The amount can also differ where a provider stretches annual funded hours across more than 38 weeks.
Average Nursery Cost In Scotland
Scotland has its own funded early learning and childcare system. Funded provision is generally more extensive once a child reaches the qualifying age, but families with younger children can face substantial private nursery fees.
Local-authority delivery, provider availability and eligibility for funded provision for younger children can affect the amount a family pays.
Average Nursery Cost In Wales
Wales has the Childcare Offer for eligible three- and four-year-olds and Flying Start provision for some younger children. Private costs for children below those programmes can remain high.
The availability of funded sessions and the way early education is combined with childcare can differ by provider and local authority.
Nursery Costs In Northern Ireland
Comparable national nursery-cost data is not always presented in the same format for Northern Ireland. Parents should obtain local provider quotes and check the current childcare support available through nidirect.
Why Nursery Costs Vary Across The UK
Nursery fees reflect the cost of providing safe, regulated childcare. Staffing is a major part of that cost, but rent, utilities, insurance, food, training, administration and resources also affect the price.
Child’s Age
Babies and younger children generally need more adults per child, which can make their nursery places more expensive.
Local Area
Wages, rent, business rates, demand and the availability of nursery places vary between regions and neighbourhoods.
Session Pattern
Full-day, half-day, school-day and hourly bookings can produce very different effective hourly costs.
Funding Model
Funded hours may reduce private fees, but the amount depends on eligibility and the provider’s delivery pattern.
Child Age And Staffing Requirements
Younger children require closer supervision and care. A baby room usually needs more staff for the same number of children than a preschool room, increasing the cost per available place.
Fees may therefore reduce when a child moves into an older age group, although this is not automatic. Ask when the nursery changes its rate and whether the reduction applies from the birthday or a later billing period.
Regional Nursery Costs
Nursery costs are often higher in locations with expensive commercial property, higher salaries and strong demand for limited childcare places. London and parts of the South East can therefore have prices substantially above a national average.
A nursery in a lower-cost area may still charge more where it provides longer opening hours, smaller groups, specialist services or meals and consumables within the normal fee.
Full Days Versus Part-Time Sessions
A full-day rate can offer a lower effective hourly price than a short session. However, parents should compare the total amount payable rather than choosing longer sessions solely because the hourly equivalent appears cheaper.
Minimum booking requirements can also increase costs. A family needing six hours may have to pay for a ten-hour nursery day if the provider does not sell shorter sessions.
Demand And Availability
Providers with long waiting lists may have less incentive to offer flexible sessions or discounted rates. Limited availability can also force families to combine providers, creating duplicate deposits, travel costs or minimum bookings.
What Is Included In Nursery Fees?
Nursery fee structures are not identical. A provider may advertise an all-inclusive day rate, while another charges a lower basic rate plus meals, consumables and activities.
| Fee Or Charge | What To Check | Possible Budget Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly Or Session Fee | Confirm the exact times included and whether partial sessions are available. | Minimum session lengths may increase the hours you must pay for. |
| Registration Fee | Ask whether it is refundable and whether payment guarantees a place. | Registration fees can be lost if you later choose another setting. |
| Deposit | Check when the deposit is returned or credited. | A substantial deposit creates an upfront childcare cost. |
| Meals And Snacks | Ask whether food is included or charged daily. | Small daily charges can become a significant annual amount. |
| Nappies And Consumables | Find out whether parents can supply their own items. | Consumable charges may continue during funded sessions. |
| Activities And Trips | Check whether the activities are optional. | Specialist classes and outings can create irregular costs. |
| Late Collection | Confirm when the charge begins and how it is calculated. | Commuting delays can produce substantial extra fees. |
| Absence And Holiday Charges | Ask whether normal fees remain due when your child is away. | You may pay for care that your child does not use. |
| Annual Fee Increase | Ask when fees are reviewed and how notice is provided. | Future increases can change the affordability of a place. |
Ask For A Sample Nursery Invoice
A personalised sample invoice is more useful than a headline hourly rate. It should reflect your chosen days, your child’s age, funded hours, meals, other services and the provider’s billing calendar.
Ask how the invoice changes in months containing bank holidays, training days or planned nursery closures. Also confirm whether monthly bills are fixed or vary according to the calendar.
Read The Nursery Contract Carefully
The contract should explain payment dates, deposits, late-payment fees, notice periods, session changes, funded-hours arrangements and charges during absence.
A long notice period can create overlapping fees if you move to another provider. Check whether reducing attendance requires the same notice as leaving completely.
How To Reduce Nursery Costs
Childcare support can significantly reduce nursery fees, but each programme has separate eligibility and application rules. Parents should compare all relevant options before changing an existing claim.
Use Funded Childcare Hours
Eligible working parents in England may receive up to 30 funded childcare hours per week for 38 weeks of the year for a child aged from nine months to four years. Providers may offer fewer weekly hours across more weeks.
Funded hours must be accessible without mandatory charges relating to the funded time itself. Government funding does not necessarily cover meals, consumables, additional hours or optional services.
Apply For Tax-Free Childcare
Tax-Free Childcare provides a government top-up for eligible childcare payments. For every £8 paid into the childcare account, the government can add £2, within the scheme limits.
It may be used for qualifying nursery costs that remain after funded childcare has been applied, provided the nursery is approved for the scheme.
Check Universal Credit Childcare Support
Eligible working Universal Credit claimants may be able to recover up to 85% of qualifying registered childcare costs, subject to the current limits and claim rules.
Universal Credit childcare support and Tax-Free Childcare cannot normally be received at the same time. Use an official calculator before switching.
Compare Attendance Patterns
Reducing one long nursery day may save more than reducing a small number of hours across several days, particularly where the provider charges fixed sessions.
Compare term-time and stretched funded-hours patterns. A term-time arrangement can provide more funded hours during attended weeks, while stretched funding can reduce fees across more of the year.
Ask About Workplace Support
Employers may provide workplace nurseries, childcare discounts, flexible working arrangements or other family benefits. Parents with older childcare-voucher accounts should check the rules before making changes.
Compare More Than One Provider
Request like-for-like quotes based on the same days, times and funding assumptions. A cheaper headline rate may not remain cheaper after compulsory extras and minimum bookings are included.
