Preschool is an early education setting for children before they begin primary school. Depending on the provider and the part of the UK, it may be called a preschool, pre-school, playgroup, nursery class, early learning and childcare setting or foundation-stage provision.

Changes From 1 September 2026

Updated EYFS frameworks take effect in England on 1 September 2026. Providers must use the version that applies to their provider type and date. The changes include strengthened safeguarding and welfare wording, including clearer safer-sleep requirements and guidance concerning screen use.

Parents do not need to interpret the entire statutory framework, but it is reasonable to ask a provider how its policies reflect current safeguarding, sleep, digital-media and staff-practice requirements.

Funded Preschool Hours In England

All three- and four-year-olds in England can generally receive 15 hours of funded early education for 38 weeks a year from the term after their third birthday until they start school. Eligible working families can receive up to 30 hours from the term after a child turns nine months old until school starts, subject to the current conditions and application deadlines.

Funded hours are not necessarily completely cost-free in every practical sense. Providers may charge for meals, consumables, optional activities, additional hours or services outside the funded offer. Ask for a clear written breakdown before accepting a place.

• Observe how adults speak with children and handle emotions.
• Look for accessible outdoor play and varied open-ended resources.

For settings in England, use the official Ofsted inspection report search. An inspection report is useful context, but it should be combined with a visit and current questions because leadership, staffing and practice can change.

Preschool Readiness

There is no single checklist every child must pass. Providers should adapt to children’s individual development, language, health and additional needs. Helpful foundations include short separations from a parent or carer, communicating basic needs, beginning to follow simple routines and showing curiosity about other children.

To prepare, read books about preschool, practise putting on a coat, label belongings, establish predictable morning routines and talk positively without promising that the child will never feel worried.

Settling-In Sessions

Many preschools offer a visit, home conversation or short settling sessions. Share information about comfort items, toileting, food, sleep, family language, medical needs and strategies that help when your child is upset.

Some children settle quickly while others need a gradual plan. Consistent goodbyes, a familiar key person and calm communication between home and preschool are usually more helpful than secretly leaving.

Ask whether fees are payable during sickness, holidays, bank holidays or emergency closures. Also check deposits, registration fees, late collection charges and the notice required to reduce or leave sessions.

Special Educational Needs And Disabilities

A child does not need a formal diagnosis before a provider listens to concerns and considers appropriate support. However, access to particular funding or specialist services may depend on local assessment processes.

Starting Reception After Preschool

Attending a school’s nursery or preschool does not automatically guarantee a Reception place. Reception admissions usually follow a separate local-authority process and published school admission criteria.

Preschool should support transition by sharing relevant information, building confidence with routines and helping children develop communication, self-care and relationships—not by recreating formal school lessons too early.
