Key Facts About Nursery At 6 Months
Six months can be a workable nursery-start age when the setting is suitable for babies and the transition is carefully planned.
Is 6 Months Too Early For Nursery?
There is no single right age for every baby. Some families begin nursery at six months because of work, study or family circumstances, while others start later. The quality of the setting, continuity of carers, your baby’s health and temperament, and the way the transition is managed matter more than comparing your family with others.
Look for calm, responsive adults who notice individual cues, comfort babies promptly and explain how they manage feeds, naps, nappy changes and development.
- Ask how key-person care works in the baby room.
- Observe whether staff get down to babies’ level and respond warmly.
- Check safe sleep, bottle preparation and allergy procedures.
- Confirm how updates, accidents and concerns are communicated.
How To Choose A Nursery For A 6 Month Old
Start with registration, inspection information and safeguarding, then look closely at daily practice in the baby room. Ask who will be your baby’s key person, how cover works when that person is absent and whether staff turnover is low enough to support consistent relationships.
Questions To Ask During A Visit
- How many babies are in the room and how many adults are present throughout the day?
- How are bottles labelled, stored, warmed and recorded?
- Where do babies sleep, and how often are sleeping babies checked?
- How are nappies, creams, allergies and medicines managed?
- Can the nursery follow an individual routine rather than one fixed timetable?
- What happens when a baby is upset or refuses a feed?
Registration And Inspection
In England, check the provider’s registration and latest report through Ofsted. Families elsewhere in the UK should use the relevant national childcare regulator.
Settling A 6 Month Old Into Nursery
Begin with short, low-pressure visits where your baby can meet the key person while you remain nearby. Gradually increase separation where the nursery offers this. Give staff a written routine covering milk, naps, wake windows, comfort methods, favourite songs, signs of tiredness and anything that usually causes distress.
Make Goodbyes Calm And Predictable
Use a short goodbye routine rather than disappearing. Babies can experience separation anxiety from around six months, and this is a normal part of development. A consistent handover helps the nursery learn how to reassure your baby.
Expect An Adjustment Period
Temporary changes in sleep, feeding or clinginess can happen during a new routine. Keep communication open and seek health advice if your baby is feeding poorly, unusually sleepy, persistently distressed or otherwise unwell.
Feeds, Sleep, Nappies And Daily Care
Milk And Early Weaning
Agree how expressed milk or formula will be transported, stored, prepared and recorded. At around six months some babies begin complementary foods, but milk remains important. Give the nursery written allergy information and follow advice from your health visitor or NHS guidance.
Safe Sleep
Ask to see the sleep space and policy. The nursery should explain positioning, supervision, room temperature, bedding and how sleep checks are documented. Tell staff about your baby’s usual sleep cues while recognising that the nursery environment may lead to different nap timings.
Nappies And Skin Care
Confirm whether nappies, wipes and creams are supplied. Label prescribed or agreed products clearly, and ask how changes are logged and how soreness or unusual stools are reported.
| Item | What To Confirm |
|---|---|
| Milk and bottles | Labelling, cold-chain storage, preparation and unused-milk policy. |
| Food | Textures, allergens, choking precautions and meal records. |
| Sleep | Safe sleep procedure, checks and communication. |
| Nappies | Supplies, creams, frequency and change records. |
| Comfort items | Whether a dummy, muslin or small familiar item is permitted. |
Nursery Costs For A 6 Month Old
Baby-room places can cost more than care for older children because younger babies require closer staffing. Ask for a written fee schedule showing the daily or session price, minimum booking pattern, deposit, registration fee, notice period and charges for holidays or absence.
Funded Childcare At This Age
In England, eligible working parents can receive funded childcare from the term after a child turns nine months, so a six-month-old will usually not yet receive those funded hours. Applications can open earlier, and eligibility rules and term dates should be checked on GOV.UK.
Other Support
Depending on your circumstances, Tax-Free Childcare, Universal Credit childcare support, employer schemes or student support may help with registered childcare costs. Avoid counting support until you have confirmed eligibility and the date it can be used.
