What Changes Your Monthly Nursery Bill?
Your nursery cost per month depends on more than the hourly rate. The booking pattern, number of chargeable weeks, funded hours and provider extras can all affect the amount payable.

Why Monthly Nursery Fees Can Be Confusing
A nursery may advertise an hourly, session or daily fee but collect payment monthly. This can make it difficult to estimate the amount that will leave your bank account each month.
Some providers invoice for the sessions delivered during each calendar month. Others calculate the annual value of your booking and divide it into 12 equal payments. Funded hours may also be allocated differently during term time and school holidays.
- Check whether monthly payments are fixed or variable
- Confirm the number of chargeable weeks in the year
- Ask how funded hours are allocated to your sessions
- Include meals, nappies and activity charges
- Review bank holiday and nursery closure policies
- Check when annual fee increases normally take effect
Nursery Cost Per Month Calculator UK Guide
The Nursery Cost Per Month Calculator estimates how much you may need to pay for nursery care during an average month. It converts your weekly attendance and provider fee into an annual cost, then accounts for funded childcare, discounts, additional charges and optional Tax-Free Childcare support.
The result is useful when comparing nursery quotations or planning a household budget. However, it does not replace the written fee schedule or invoice issued by your childcare provider.
How To Calculate Nursery Cost Per Month
Begin by calculating the number of childcare hours booked each week. Multiply the number of nursery days by the hours booked each day. Multiply this weekly total by the nursery’s hourly rate and the number of chargeable weeks during the year.
The calculator then adds your monthly extras and annual fees. It deducts the estimated value of funded childcare, regular monthly discounts and any simplified Tax-Free Childcare estimate selected.
Why Divide Nursery Costs By 12?
Dividing the annual cost by 12 creates an average monthly figure. This can be useful for budgeting even when the nursery sends different invoices each month.
Some nurseries already use this method and collect the same amount every month. Others invoice according to the number of booked days falling within each month, meaning February may be cheaper than a month containing more weekdays.
| Payment Method | How It Works | Possible Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Equal monthly payments | Annual estimated fee divided by 12 | Monthly direct debit remains broadly consistent |
| Actual monthly sessions | Invoice reflects sessions booked in that calendar month | Monthly payment may rise or fall |
| Term-time billing | Charges apply mainly during term dates | Costs may be concentrated into fewer months |
| Stretched funding | Annual funded entitlement is spread across more weeks | Private monthly fees may become more consistent |
Average Monthly Nursery Hours
A simple way to estimate monthly childcare hours is to multiply weekly hours by 52 and divide the result by 12. This produces an average of approximately 4.33 weeks per month.
For example, a child attending nursery for 30 hours each week would use an average of around 130 childcare hours per month when the calculation is based on a full 52-week year.
The calculator instead uses the number of chargeable nursery weeks you enter. This provides a more relevant estimate when the provider closes for holidays or offers term-time-only care.
Gross Monthly Cost And Net Monthly Cost
The gross monthly cost is the estimated nursery fee before funded childcare, discounts and financial support are deducted. The net monthly cost is the estimated amount left for your family to pay after the entered reductions.
- Gross cost includes private childcare fees and additional nursery charges.
- Funded childcare reduces the estimated private fee where applicable.
- Monthly discounts reduce the amount payable across the year.
- Tax-Free Childcare may reduce the amount parents need to contribute from their own funds.
- Deposits are displayed separately because they are usually one-off payments.
How Funded Childcare Changes Monthly Nursery Costs
Funded childcare can reduce the number of private hours included in your nursery bill. The effect on your monthly payment depends on your eligibility, your child’s age, the provider’s delivery model and the number of weeks over which the entitlement is used.
A term-time funding arrangement may provide more funded hours each week during a smaller number of weeks. A stretched arrangement may provide fewer funded hours each week across a longer period.
Term-Time Pattern
Funded hours are concentrated into the standard funding weeks, which may reduce term-time invoices more significantly.
Stretched Pattern
The annual entitlement is divided across more weeks, which can produce a steadier monthly nursery bill.
Private Sessions
Any hours outside the confirmed funded allocation usually remain payable at the provider’s private rate.
Additional Charges
Meals, nappies, activities and extended hours may remain payable even when childcare hours are funded.
How The Calculator Values Funded Hours
The calculator multiplies the funded hours entered by the number of funding weeks and the nursery’s private hourly rate. It then converts the result into an average monthly saving.
This is a planning method only. Local authority funding rates and private nursery rates may differ, and providers do not always show funded childcare as a direct cash discount on an invoice.
Tax-Free Childcare And Monthly Nursery Bills
Eligible parents may use a Tax-Free Childcare account to pay a registered provider. The government generally adds £2 for every £8 paid into the account, subject to the scheme’s limits and eligibility conditions.
The calculator’s optional estimate applies a simplified top-up to the remaining annual cost and converts that figure into a monthly equivalent. It does not check quarterly limits, account activity, disability-related limits or eligibility.
Always confirm the current rules using the official Tax-Free Childcare guidance .
Extra Charges To Add To Your Monthly Nursery Budget
The basic childcare fee may not represent the full monthly amount payable. Ask the provider for a list of compulsory, optional, refundable and one-off charges before comparing nursery costs.
Meals And Snacks
Some providers include food within the standard nursery fee. Others charge a separate amount for breakfast, lunch, tea or snacks. Ask whether parents can supply suitable alternatives.
Nappies And Consumables
Nurseries may charge for nappies, wipes, sun cream, craft supplies and hygiene products. These fees may be charged daily, weekly or monthly.
Extended Hours
Early drop-off, late collection and hours outside the standard session may carry additional charges. Late collection fees can be significantly higher than the usual hourly rate.
Registration And Administration
A nursery may charge a registration, administration or annual membership fee. Dividing annual charges by 12 gives a useful monthly budgeting equivalent.
Deposits
A nursery deposit is often payable before a place begins. It may be refunded, retained until the final invoice or credited against future fees, depending on the provider’s contract.
Holiday And Sickness Charges
Many providers continue charging when a child is absent because the nursery place remains reserved. Policies for bank holidays, staff training days and nursery closures can differ.
