Daily Rate Providers may charge by the hour, session or complete day.
8
Booked Hours Longer nursery days usually create a higher basic childcare cost.

Compare The Real Cost Of One Nursery Day

A nursery’s advertised daily price may not represent the amount that appears on your final invoice. Some providers include food, consumables and activities, while others add them separately.

Funded childcare can also change the private amount due, but the effect depends on how the nursery applies funded hours to your booking. Calculate the complete cost for your actual schedule before comparing providers.

  • Confirm the exact start and finish time of the nursery day.
  • Check whether meals and consumables are included.
  • Ask how funded hours are allocated to the booking.
  • Review charges for absence, holidays and closures.
  • Compare the cost after discounts and childcare support.

How The Nursery Cost Per Day Calculator Works

The Nursery Cost Per Day Calculator estimates how much one booked nursery day may cost. It supports providers that charge by the hour, by session or through a fixed full-day rate.

The calculator first works out the gross daily fee. It then adds any daily extras and subtracts an estimated share of funded childcare, nursery discounts, Tax-Free Childcare and other support.

Calculating A Nursery Day From An Hourly Fee

For hourly nursery fees, multiply the hourly rate by the number of chargeable hours in one nursery day.

Example: If a nursery charges £8.50 per hour and a booked day lasts eight hours, the basic daily nursery fee would be £68 before extras, funding, discounts or childcare support.

Calculating A Fixed Daily Nursery Fee

When the nursery publishes a full-day rate, enter that figure directly and select the full-day charging method. The hours field is still needed to estimate the equivalent hourly rate and the value of funded childcare.

Calculating A Nursery Session Fee

A session may cover a morning, afternoon or extended period. Enter the nursery’s fee for the session and the actual number of hours included in that session.

If your child attends two separately charged sessions in one day, enter their combined daily price or calculate each session separately.

How Funded Hours Affect Daily Nursery Cost

Funded childcare is normally expressed as weekly hours over a set number of weeks. To estimate its daily value, the calculator spreads the confirmed funded hours across the nursery days entered.

This approach provides a practical budgeting estimate, but nurseries may apply funding to specific sessions, stretch it across additional weeks or charge separately for meals and consumables.

Term-Time Funding

Funded hours may be concentrated into a smaller number of weeks, creating different invoices during funded and non-funded terms.

Stretched Funding

A provider may offer fewer funded hours each week across more of the year to create a more consistent childcare schedule.

Nursery Extras That Can Increase The Daily Cost

The advertised childcare fee may not include every service used during the nursery day. Ask the provider for a complete written fee schedule.

  • Breakfast, lunch, snacks or drinks.
  • Nappies, wipes and other consumables.
  • Trips, outings and specialist activities.
  • Early drop-off or late collection.
  • Registration, administration or deposit charges.
  • Additional hours outside the standard session.

Tax-Free Childcare And Daily Nursery Fees

Tax-Free Childcare can help eligible families pay registered childcare costs. For every eligible amount paid into a childcare account, the government may add a top-up within the scheme’s current rules and limits.

Check eligibility and current conditions through the official Tax-Free Childcare service.

Universal Credit Childcare Support

Some working households may be able to claim support with registered childcare costs through Universal Credit. The amount depends on household circumstances and should not be assumed from the nursery’s headline day rate.

Current information is available from the official Universal Credit childcare guidance.

Daily Nursery Cost Calculation Stages

Calculation Stage Method Purpose
Gross daily fee Hourly rate × daily hours, or fixed session/day rate Basic price before reductions
Daily extras Meals, consumables and services added to the basic fee Creates a more realistic daily total
Funded reduction Average eligible funded value allocated per nursery day Estimates the private fee reduction
Nursery discount Selected percentage applied to eligible remaining fees Reflects sibling or provider discounts
Support estimate Selected Tax-Free Childcare and other contributions Estimates the family-funded amount

How To Compare Nursery Day Rates

Do not compare providers using only their published day rate. One nursery may offer a longer day, include all meals and allow flexible funded hours, while another may charge separately for these items.

Compare the same number of hours, services and weeks. You should also consider opening times, location, staff qualifications, inspection history, educational approach and how well the setting meets your child’s needs.

Why Your Invoice May Differ From The Calculator

The calculator cannot reproduce every nursery contract. Your final charge may be different because of:

  • Minimum booking requirements.
  • Different fees for babies, toddlers and preschool children.
  • Funding restricted to particular sessions.
  • Separate food and consumable charges.
  • Holiday, closure and absence policies.
  • Late collection or additional-hour fees.
  • Changes to nursery prices during the year.
  • Childcare support eligibility and payment limits.
Request a personalised written illustration showing the normal daily fee, funded-hours allocation, extras, payment dates and notice policy before accepting a nursery place.

Checking Nursery Registration And Inspection Information

Families in England can review registered childcare providers and inspection reports through Ofsted. Separate regulatory organisations operate in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Important: This nursery cost per day calculator is an independent planning tool. It does not provide a nursery quote, determine funded-childcare eligibility, calculate an official benefit award or guarantee childcare support. Confirm all fees with the nursery and verify support through the relevant official service.

Nursery Cost Per Day Calculator FAQs

Common questions about daily nursery prices, funded childcare and additional nursery charges.

Multiply the hourly nursery fee by the number of booked hours in one day, or use the provider’s fixed session or day rate. Add meals and other daily extras, then subtract eligible funding, discounts and childcare support.
Yes. Enter the funded hours your nursery confirms can be applied each week and the number of funded weeks. The calculator estimates an average funded reduction for each booked nursery day.
This depends on the provider. Some nurseries include meals and snacks in the standard fee, while others charge separately. Add any separate amount to the daily extras field.
Funded childcare relates to eligible childcare hours. Providers may still charge for additional private hours and optional services such as food, nappies, activities or trips. Ask for a written explanation of all charges.
Yes. Select the Tax-Free Childcare option to include an estimated top-up against the remaining eligible nursery cost. Confirm eligibility through the official Tax-Free Childcare service.
Your invoice may include registration fees, deposits, additional hours, meals, consumables, holiday charges or other items that were not entered. Funding may also be applied differently by the provider.
Many nurseries continue to charge for booked days when a child is absent because the place and staffing remain reserved. Check the provider’s absence and sickness policy.
Multiply the final daily cost by the number of nursery days per week and the number of payable weeks per year, then divide the annual result by 12. This produces an average monthly budget.
