What Should You Look For During A Nursery Visit?
The strongest evidence often comes from ordinary interactions and clear answers, not decoration, staged activities or marketing language.

Observe The Nursery, Not Only The Tour
A polished presentation does not always show what daily nursery life feels like. Pay attention to how staff communicate, whether children can seek comfort and how smoothly ordinary routines are managed.
Ask open questions and request written documents where the answer affects your finances, childcare entitlement or contractual obligations.
- Watch staff-child interactions.
- Visit the correct age room.
- Ask about an ordinary day.
- Review the full fee schedule.
- Do not rush a large deposit.
Nursery Visit Checklist: Complete Parent Guide
A nursery visit allows parents to assess the setting beyond its website, photographs and inspection grade. The aim is not to find a nursery that gives perfect answers to every question, but to understand how the setting cares for children and whether its practical arrangements fit your family.
Try to visit more than one nursery and use the same nursery visit checklist at each setting. This reduces the risk of comparing one nursery’s atmosphere with another nursery’s fees without reviewing both areas consistently.
What To Do Before The Nursery Visit
- Confirm the exact address and appointment time.
- Ask whether your child can attend the visit.
- Write down the days and hours you require.
- Know the child’s proposed start date.
- List any allergies, medical or additional needs.
- Prepare questions about funded childcare.
- Request the fee schedule and parent contract.
- Check which age room you will be shown.
Should You Take Your Child To The Visit?
Taking the child can help parents observe how staff greet them and how the child responds to the environment. However, a tired or overwhelmed child may make it harder to focus on questions.
Some parents complete an initial adult visit and return with the child for a shorter second visit. Ask the nursery what it allows.
Visit While Children Are Present
Where possible, visit during normal operating hours. An empty room can show the physical environment but not how staff supervise, communicate and organise daily routines.
Avoid judging the nursery negatively because children are active, noisy or untidy. A busy play environment can still be calm, purposeful and well supervised.
First Impressions To Record
Environment
Did the nursery feel welcoming, safe, appropriately busy and suitable for the child’s age?
Staff Response
Did adults notice children, respond calmly and communicate respectfully?
Children
Did children appear able to play, rest, seek help and move between suitable activities?
Transparency
Were questions answered clearly, including fees, staffing, incidents and difficult situations?

Nursery Fees And Contract Checklist
Nursery fees should be reviewed in writing rather than relying on a headline daily rate. The total annual cost may include additional hours, meals, consumables, registration payments and chargeable closure periods.
Ask For A Complete Fee Schedule
Request a document showing all ordinary fees and additional charges. Ask whether the nursery bills by hour, session, day, week or annualised monthly instalment.
| Cost Area | Question To Ask | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Daily Or Session Fee | What exact hours are included? | Early drop-off or late collection may cost extra. |
| Meals | Are food and snacks included? | Regular meal charges can materially increase the bill. |
| Consumables | Are nappies, wipes or activities compulsory extras? | Funded places can still involve additional charges. |
| Deposit | When is it refundable or credited? | Cancellation terms may affect whether money is returned. |
| Closures | Which holidays and closures remain chargeable? | Families may pay when the nursery is not open. |
| Notice Period | How much notice is required? | Parents may remain liable after stopping attendance. |
Funded Childcare Questions
- Does the nursery offer funded places for this age group?
- Are funded hours term-time, stretched or both?
- Which sessions can use funded hours?
- Are additional private hours compulsory?
- Which meals and consumables are charged?
- How will funding appear on the invoice?
- When must the childcare code be supplied?
- What happens if eligibility is not reconfirmed?

Read The Contract Before Paying
Ask for the full agreement before paying a large deposit or non-refundable registration fee. Check the fee-change clause, notice period, sickness policy, closure policy and termination terms.
How To Compare Nursery Visits
Complete your notes immediately after each visit. Details such as staff names, opening hours, funded sessions and first impressions can become difficult to remember after several tours.
Use The Same Core Questions
Asking every provider the same questions makes comparisons more useful. Add nursery-specific questions where one setting offers a different schedule or service.
Separate Evidence From Impressions
Record what you observed, what staff said and what appears in written documents. These are different forms of information.
Observed
Staff comforted children calmly and joined their play.
Explained
The manager described a gradual settling-in process.
Written
The contract states the notice period and closure charges.
Still Unclear
The nursery has not confirmed the funded-session pattern.
Compare The Whole Family Fit
Consider opening hours, commuting time, sibling collection, closure weeks and backup care. A nursery can provide excellent care but still be impractical for the family’s daily routine.
Do Not Use One Score Alone
An inspection judgement, online review, checklist percentage or recommendation can provide useful context, but it should not replace the visit and your assessment of the current setting.
Possible Nursery Visit Red Flags
One difficult moment does not automatically make a nursery unsuitable. Consider patterns, explanations and how the setting responds when you ask reasonable questions.
- Staff repeatedly ignore distressed children.
- Adults speak harshly, shame children or use threats.
- Visitors can enter children’s areas without clear checks.
- The nursery refuses to explain safeguarding procedures.
- Staffing answers are inconsistent or evasive.
- Children appear to have little access to suitable play.
- Sleep areas cannot be viewed or explained.
- Allergy procedures appear unclear.
- Fees change depending on who answers the question.
- The contract is unavailable before payment.
- Parents are pressured to pay immediately.
- Funded hours are advertised but not clearly allocated.
- Complaints are dismissed rather than explained.
What To Do If You Have A Safeguarding Concern
Raise an immediate concern with the nursery’s safeguarding lead or manager where appropriate. If a child appears to be in immediate danger, contact the relevant emergency or safeguarding service.
For concerns about a registered provider in England, review the current reporting routes through Ofsted and your local authority.
