How the Nursery Cost Per Hour Calculator Works
The calculator first converts the nursery’s advertised price into an annual base cost. It then divides that cost by the total booked or expected-used hours.
Additional charges are added separately. Confirmed funded childcare, provider discounts and monthly childcare support are then deducted to show an estimated net family cost per hour.
Daily Nursery Fee
Example: £75 ÷ 10 hours = £7.50 per booked hour.
Weekly Nursery Fee
Weekly booked hours equal days per week multiplied by hours per day.
Monthly Nursery Fee
This avoids treating every month as exactly four weeks.
Effective Family Hourly Cost
Net cost includes entered extras and deducts confirmed support.
Daily Fee Conversion
When a nursery charges by the day, the calculator multiplies the daily price by the number of booked days each week and the number of chargeable weeks in the year.
Hourly Fee Conversion
When the provider already charges by the hour, the calculator multiplies the hourly price by daily attendance hours, weekly days and annual chargeable weeks.
Fixed-Session Fee Conversion
A provider may charge separately for morning and afternoon sessions. The calculator multiplies the session fee by the number of sessions per day and attendance days per week.
Weekly Fee Conversion
A weekly package is divided by total booked weekly hours. The annual base fee is the weekly package multiplied by chargeable weeks.
Monthly Fee Conversion
A monthly nursery fee is multiplied by 12 and divided by annual booked hours. This creates a more reliable hourly comparison than multiplying the monthly fee by 12 and assuming exactly 48 weeks.
Booked Hours vs Hours Actually Used
A nursery contract may reserve a ten-hour day even when the child usually attends for eight hours. Both hourly figures can be useful, but they answer different questions.
Cost Per Booked Hour
The booked-hour calculation divides the nursery cost by every hour included in the contract. This is usually the fairest method for comparing provider prices.
Cost Per Used Hour
The used-hour calculation divides the same cost by the hours the child is expected to be physically present. It shows the practical value received by the family.

Which Figure Should You Use?
Use booked hours when comparing nursery contracts. Use expected-used hours when assessing whether a longer session provides value for your family.
Do Not Ignore Travel Time
The child may attend for eight hours while the parents need a ten-hour booking to cover commuting, handover and collection delays. Those extra booked hours can still be necessary.
How Funded Childcare Changes the Hourly Nursery Cost
Funded childcare can reduce the family’s nursery bill, but the provider may not simply deduct funded hours using its normal private hourly rate.
Provider Funding Arrangements Differ
A nursery may deliver funded childcare through specific sessions, selected days, term-time attendance or a stretched annual pattern.
Term-Time Funding
The full weekly entitlement may apply during approximately 38 funded weeks. The family may pay a higher amount during school holidays.
Stretched Funding
The annual funded entitlement may be spread across more weeks. This reduces the funded hours available in each week but creates a more consistent year-round invoice.
Funded Hours and Private Hours
The provider may separate funded sessions from private paid hours. The private hourly rate can differ from the effective value of the funded portion.
Meals and Consumables
Funded childcare may not cover meals, nappies, wipes, activities or other consumables. These charges can increase the effective family cost per hour.

Additional Charges That Change Nursery Cost Per Hour
A provider’s advertised nursery rate may exclude charges that materially increase the complete hourly family cost.
Meals and Snacks
Breakfast, lunch, tea and snacks may be included in the fee or charged separately. A daily meal charge should be included in the hourly comparison.
Nappies and Wipes
Some nurseries include nappies and wipes, while others require families to supply them or pay a weekly consumables charge.
Activities and Classes
Music, sports, language activities and external classes may be included, optional or compulsory within particular sessions.
Registration Fees
A non-refundable registration fee increases the first-year hourly cost but should not be included in ongoing annual comparisons.
Deposits
